Welcome to 2nd Grade!
10/10/23: Dear Families, Our class has earned a pajamas and coloring party tomorrow for respecting our specialist teachers. Please allow your children to wear school-appropriate pajamas and to also bring a blanket or a stuffed animal with them. I will supply the coloring pages.

August 2023
Dear Families and Students,
Welcome to a new school year! I am excited to have the opportunity to work with each of you this year. My name is Ms. Dee and I have been teaching at Arcadia for 9 years. I enjoy creating experiences where children are able to apply language, math, science and social understandings so that learning expands beyond books and children get to see how knowledge from many people has created the world around them.
I will have a packet of information when you arrive for our Back to School Morning. Please consider donating a few items to our classroom supplies. We are always in need of tissues and sanitizing wipes, these are crucial as we usually go through a box of tissues every day and a container of sanitizing wipes every week. This means that our class needs more than 100 boxes of tissues and more than 30 containers of sanitizing wipes to get through the school year! Other items that also are beneficial include glue sticks and hand sanitizer.
I have already purchased writing notebooks and a paperwork folder for each child. We primarily use pens and markers in my class (pencils break too often and waste significant amounts of instructional time). We do use pencils at specific times and I have plenty of those also. If you'd like to purchase your child a set of personal crayons, markers, and black or blue pens, those would be good for your student to have. Colored pencils are also beneficial. You can get all of these at the dollar store for $5-6, and I do have some supplies for children who need them.
We move more in this class than most and will have days when I'll ask the kids to wear older clothes if we are painting, sculpting, or doing science experiments. Plan to help your child at certain points throughout the year doing activities such as: creating an animal report and habitat diorama, learning their lines for class plays, researching items of personal interest or follow-up, allowing them to count coins and bills in your wallets or purses (practicing counting money), and researching a historical figure and selecting one way to dress up like that character to give a class presentation (biographies). Children may need help once a month with these larger projects.
It will be a fun, busy, interesting, challenging, and fulfilling year of discovery. I am excited to meet you and your children!
Let's make it a great year,
Ms. Dee

Estimadas familias y estudiantes,
Sra. Dee

Suggested Journal Topics- May 4-10, 2020
Monday- Today is May 4th, also known as: 'May the 4th Be with You' Day for all Star Wars fans. Are you a fan of Star Wars or of Sci-Fi (Science-Fiction genre) movies? Tell me what you think of Star Wars OR write about what kind of movie you'd make about the galaxy/ stars/ asteroids/ meteors/ space aliens/ robots, etc. if you could make your own movie! :)
Tuesday- This week we are studying and creating biographies about people who made the world a better place. Think forward a few years about being an older student at Arcadia. What are ways that you can plan to make it a better place when you are in 4th-5th grade?
Wednesday- Think now about becoming a teenager. Making safe and responsible choices and being kind to others are especially important at school and in families during the teenage years. Write about some ways that you can be safe and responsible OR a better listener that is more kind at school. Also write about ways you can be safe and responsible OR a better listener that is more kind at home.
Thursday- Now think forward to becoming an adult. What career do you think you'll mostly likely choose? How will you make the world a better place in college or in your career?
Friday- Most of you will grow up to be parents. It is true that being a parent is the hardest and most wonderful job in the world! Write about what kind of parent you want to be? Just like the biography of another person's life, what do you want your family and other people to remember about you and your life? This is often called 'your legacy.'

There are some pretty amazing people who have helped to change the world into a more beautiful place to be. Your challenge is to study one person and share 5-6 interesting things about this person.
First, choose someone that you'd like to study and text, email or call Ms. Dee with the name of who you will be studying.
Next, take a week and read and look up as much as you can about this person.
Then, once you know that person well, make a posterboard with images and captions that teach others more about this person.
Finally, have your parents send Ms. Dee a pic of you holding your finished poster. Be sure to dress like the person that you have studies in at least one way, or have a prop that represents them.

For most of you 'haul' has been a new word this week. I told a few of you that dump trucks are called 'haulers' because they can carry thousands of pounds of earth at a time. Here is a video that I think you'll find interesting to watch:

Journal Writing Topics
Monday- Create a free verse poem. Write about anything that interest you. It does not need to rhyme, used repeated phrase or any alliteration.
Tuesday- Develop an alliteration phrase using the first letter of your first name. For example: Susan skipped, singing silly songs successfully. Using a few extra words such as: a, the, in, to, on, with, etc. are totally fine to help your alliteration phrase make sense.
Wednesday- Write a repetition poem. Use the repeated phrase, "rain, rain go away" OR "rain, rain stay" in your repetition poem.
Thursday- Write a rhyming poem that uses the word: Spring. Other rhyming words could include: bring, sing, dream, gleam, team, ring, bling, king, queen, fling, mean, ping, cling, etc.
Friday- Write a funny poem. Shel Silverstein is one of Ms. Dee's favorite poets. Follow this link to hear "Backward Bill" one of the humorous poems that he wrote: http://www.shelsilverstein.com/fun/

Soft School Dismissal Info
March 15, 2020 Letter
Dear Student and Parents,
With the two-week soft closure of our schools, I will be preparing packets that can be picked up on Wednesday March 18th that will help keep your child engaged and progressing academically from home.
Because our class has worked on an accelerated schedule, we are fortunate to be at the point where we will be transitioning into special projects over the next two weeks. As a result, the work that your child takes home for the next two weeks will be review packets only.
My students WILL NOT be issued Chromebooks because we do not use them in our classroom. There are a few applications that will be important to use and they are listed below. Most can be accessed through a smartphone or an electronic device from your home (including a Chromebook that is checked out by a sibling at Arcadia Elementary):
Please ensure that your student is spending at least 25 minutes a day in ST Math AND 25 minutes a day in Lexia Core 5 beginning immediately.
ST Math found under the Learning Resources tab of your student's portal (your student will use his/ her '9' number login and password to access the portal):
https://portal.graniteschools.org/LoginPolicy.jsp
It is not necessary to enter a code for ST Math, just click on JiJi the Penguin where it says 'Homework'.
Lexia Core 5
This free app is available in the App Store and Google Store. Students will use their ID number that starts with a '2' to log in.
If the dismissal extends beyond Spring Break and the two-week soft closure:
I will be contacting each family individually to see if I can set up a specific time to Skype or FaceTime with your student (ideally when you are home as well) once or twice a week. I would like to do a short video-conference check-in every few days so that I can answer your student's questions and be of help to you.
Each student will be doing some classwork based on our Go Math and Wonders lessons and some individual projects as well.
In the meantime, have a wonderful spring break. I know that this Coronavirus outbreak has changed our way of life for the short term, but I am hopeful that we will all be together again soon.
All the best to each of you,
Ms. Dee
